1. The longest mustache ever is 14 feet long.
You might have thought that once a mustache is the size of, oh, one or two humans, it’s time to cut it. Well, Ram Singh Chauhan from Rajasthan doesn’t. Now 65, Ram successfully grew his mustache to a full 14 feet. It was officially measured by Guinness World Records in 2010 on the set of an Italian TV shown known as “Lo Show dei Record.” The record has stood ever since.
2. There actually is a (sort of) objective best mustache.
Personally, I’m not looking to pass judgment on anyone, but the World Beard and Moustache Championship is, and they crown mustache champions in several different categories. The competition takes place around the world; the most recent event was in Antwerp Belgium.
Interestingly, there is some debate about when the very first mustache/beard competition was, but it was apparently at some point during the latter decades of the 20th century.
3. There is a mustache spoon.
No, not a spoon that looks like a mustache, a spoon for the mustachioed. The spoon’s original purpose was to protect the eater’s mustache while eating soup. Popular around a hundred years ago, the spoon’s design features a flap that comes off the spoon and pushes the hair of the upper lip behind the barrier. With this, our whiskered friends (I’m thinking of you, Ram) can eat their soup without having their mustache ruined by dinner.
4. There are 15 styles of mustaches.
Even though mustaches were depicted as early as 2550 BC, Wikipedia only identifies 15 styles of mustaches. That said, depending on what you’re trying to do, some of those 15 don’t even count. For example, the World Beard and Moustache Championship only accounts for six styles in their competition, including Natural, Dali, English, Imperial, Hungarian, and Freestyle.
5. Your mustache might be worth a book.
Granted, probably not. But eccentric artist Salvador Dali actually wrote a book about his, titled Dali’s Mustache. There’s more to the book than just the mustache, but you could probably categorize it as a combination of quirky mustache and quirky Dali.
